Frances’s Breakfast Chocolate Gravy Recipe (Little Healthier Version)

 My mom!

Chocolate gravy

Hello! Beauties! Today I want to share a very special recipe of mine with you. This recipe was passed down to me by my mom (pictured above). I have altered what was her original recipe to be a little more healthier but still very tasty. The recipe is my mom’s famous breakfast chocolate gravy that she made for us every Sunday morning. For this Sunday breakfast she would also make homemade biscuits, eggs (to order), bacon and sausage. Even my married siblings would come home these mornings to join us for this big breakfast. Sometimes even some extended family members along with friends would come join us. It was nothing for there to be at least 10 or more people there for Sunday breakfast. This recipe is even more special to me now because sadly my mom died January 6, 2012. I still miss her so much each and every day. I now cherish all the memories of the good times we shared together with each other, family and friends.

Ingredients needed:

  • 1/2 cup Splenda
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Cocoa powder
  • 3 Heaping Tablespoons of all purpose flour
  • dash of salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2-1 teaspoon of vanilla (optional)
  • 1 Tablespoon stick real butter (optional)

Mix all dry ingredients in small sauce pan. Stir in the water and place on medium heat (5) and stir with a whisk or spoon constantly for the most part, most especially at the end. You want to cook it until it thickens to an smooth gravy texture, not real thick. Usually takes using my electric stove about 8-10 minutes. Then remove from heat and add vanilla and butter and stir together.

My husband and myself now just halve our (Grands)biscuit and pour some chocolate gravy on top and eat it along with some either turkey bacon or turkey little smokie sausages.

The only things I changed in my mom’s recipe is I use 1/2 cup splenda instead of 1 cup of regular sugar and I add only 1 Tablespoon of real stick butter to whole pan.  I have heard some people uses milk instead of water but my mom never used milk. My mom always allowed each person to add their own amount of butter to their own serving of the hot gravy. Also most of the time her biscuits were homemade from scratch, sad to say, I did not inherit that talent from my mom…..trust me, I have tried and they were not pretty!……LOL! Those big Sunday breakfast meals and time together with her, family and friends still gives me so many great memories.

I hope you enjoy this unique southern breakfast recipe. I know we do, of course in moderation. It is always a treat when we do.
